Mobile App Answers for the Jobsite

Just one year after The Trowel provided a review of construction related computer software, similar technology has become  widely available for use with handheld mobile phones (i.e. iPhones, iPads, Androids and Blackberry mobile devices) directly on  the job site.

These affordable applications, known simply as “apps” range from typical calculators, flashlights, and levelers, through to project  management software and contract generators. Because there are hundreds of variations of apps available online, some  additional research is required, but here are some examples of mobile apps receiving great reviews.

Flashlight – Perhaps the most basic of app ideas, who hasn't used their mobile device as a makeshift flashlight at one point? There are dozens of flashlight apps to choose from that literally turn a mobile device into a small flashlight, perfect for lighting up the smallest spaces.

My Measures and Dimensions – An app that allows contractors to take a picture of any part of a room and enter in appropriate measurements and special instructions. No more pen and paper when meeting with distributors. Simply refer to the phone.

Square Footage Calculator – As simple as it sounds, just enter the feet and inches and let the app report the answer.

Cost Per Square Foot – After receiving a quote from a distributor on what materials are going to cost, enter the dimensions into this app and find out the actual costs. Similarly, this works great for providing contractor estimates as well.

Business Card Reader – At the next convention or trade show, use this app to take a photo of someone’s business card and guarantee the information won't be lost during travels.

Quad Level – The Quad Level could very well replace that bulky level from the tool box. This app displays results are horizontal, vertical, 2D and diagonal readings, and in both metric and imperial.

Carpenter’s Helper Pro – The Pro version of this app gives contractors almost everything required for making calculations, creating accurate estimates, and planning complete projects. The Quick Job feature has a selection for typical contractor concerns like drywall, fencing, and roofing.

Expensify – With Expensify, a user can easily organize receipts and invoices, and create expense reports. This is a free app that could benefit the bookkeeper in a number of ways.

Drywall Estimator – Estimate drywall needs and costs while on the go. Simply enter approximate room dimensions, the dimensions of any door or window openings, and get the number of sheets needed. This app supports any sized drywall sheet and can also estimate the cost of the boards.

Builder Dan’s Toolbox – This toolbox is great for referencing Canadian building codes for both contractors and DIYers. But remember, nothing replaces the knowledge of a code expert.

EZ Loan Calc – Use to figure out the money needed for a project and get an estimate of what a loan from the bank might cost you.

iHandy Carpenter – A toolkit on right on a mobile device. This app features five carpentry tools: a plumb bob, a surface level, a bubble lever bar, a protractor, and a ruler, all to make simple installations simpler.

ConsumerReports.org – A great website that is now available as a mobile device app. Check in with this app to read up on consumer product testing before committing to any type of building material.

SmartBidNet – For anyone already using SmartBidNet bid management software, consider the app for portable use. This app allows users to keep track of subcontractor and vendor interactions, including both bid and project specifications. Only for use with existing SmartBidNet customers.

goBIM – This app allows you to view BIM models from your mobile device. It works by using a goBIM exporter with your existing BIM application to create a .gbm file. Then you load the file onto a web server and access them later using your phone.

iQuick Contract Maker – This neat application allows contractors to create and email contracts to customers from your phone. It works by using templates and existing written information for generating new contracts. Create customize contracts each with consistent branding and language.

Green Apps – Since it was first introduced, the LEED certification process is slowly becoming easier to aim for as more training has become available. Now, the mobile device apps make the process even simpler. The EcoFlash BD+C Lite and the LEED AP Building Design + Construction apps are flashcard apps to help people study for the LEED AP 2009 Building Design & Construction exam. The latter includes over 200 flashcards and a 100 question practice exam. Okay, perhaps the LEED process hasn't gotten any simpler, but these apps are better than learning from a bulker manual.

On a similar note, by using the Green Pro app, contractors, architects, and other industry specialists, can access and track LEED credits for New Construction and Major Renovations. People with the app can access credit requirements and track when particular requirements are met.

This list is just a small percentage of what has become available for the construction industry over the last couple of years. The apps market is growing quickly, and the competition amongst developers is creating so many options at fair prices. Many are available at no charge.
