Green Leaders Join Forces to Promote More Sustainable Urban Environments

The Canada Green Building Council (CaGBC) and the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA) announced today their commitment to work together to achieve their mutual goal of a more sustainable urban environment. The TRCA has developed many innovative programs and initiatives that other local governments across Canada can learn from in developing their own initiatives.

With their combined resources and networks, the CaGBC and the TRCA will provide leadership and resources to the building industry and local governments in the Greater Toronto area in their efforts to build sustainable communities. The Council and the TRCA will work to educate municipalities within the Great Golden Horseshoe area of the relevance of assessment programs, includ- ing LEED® and GREEN UP as tools useful to promote sustainable growth.

“We are extremely pleased to be continuing our collabora- tion with the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority,” said Thomas Mueller, President and CEO of the CaGBC. “This alliance will allow us to continue promoting sustainability throughout the Greater Toronto Region and also give the Council a platform to expand our development and delivery of our LEED® products.”

The TRCA is a leading local government/non-profit organization which is showing significant leadership in green building. This includes the Kortright Centre which showcases innovative green buildings and homes, technologies and products which can serve as examples to other jurisdictions in Ontario and elsewhere in Canada. TRCA programs such as The Living City, Greening Health Care, Greening Retail, and the Mayors’ Megawatt Challenge are leading examples of engaging key sectors in green building, retrofit and management practices in the region of greater Toronto. The CaGBC will work and support TRCA’s programs by providing further support where suitable with the delivery of green building and community development programs such as LEED®, GREEN UP, and SmartGrowth to local government and private sector within the GTA and to other Conservation Authorities in Ontario.
